When a Rape Goes Unreported

“I was a cadet at the Air Force Academy. I was raped by a senior cadet raped me in a secluded area.I remained silent because victims were to be blamed for their rapes…I developed herpes. The virus traveled to my spinal cord causing meningitis…I wouldn’t dare risk my career by telling them the truth of what happened to me.So the virus went untreated.I have developed a life-long,chronic daily headache disorder.I lost my career and my dream of becoming a pilot. I was medically discharged from the military; Consequences of not reporting my rape.My rape has cost the federal government a million dollars. We need strong leaders who recognize the costs of staying silent.”
